The typical municipal garbage truck travels about 25,000 miles annually, gets less than three miles/gal, and uses around 8,600 gallons of fuel/year. By some estimates, 60–80 percent of the total money spent for the collection, transportation and the disposal of solid waste is spent on the collection phase. This session addresses route optimization and scheduling of solid waste collection as a means to better cost-saving measures for municipalities.
