Adam Stieg

California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA

Adam Z. Stieg serves as Associate Director of CNSI and is responsible for oversight of the Institute’s six Core Technology Centers - a collection of open-access user facilities that foster innovation across disciplines, facilitate university collaborations with industry, and aid in the rapid commercialization of discoveries by supporting over 5000 researchers from academia and industry. He directly oversees operations of the CNSI Integrated Systems Nanofabrication Cleanroom as well as the Nano and Pico Characterization Laboratory. Dr. Stieg earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Drew University and both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Inorganic and Physical Chemistry from UCLA. As a scientist and educator, Dr. Stieg's research seeks to bridge the gap between our fundamental understanding of nanomaterials and how these systems tend toward complexity as mesoscopic scales. His work involves the application of high-performance scanning probe microscopes and real-time, multichannel measurement systems in the development of functional nanosystems including semiconducting single crystals, transition metal oxides, chalcogenides, perovskites, and various biological systems toward applications in renewable energy, developmental biology, and unconventional computing. His research activities are augmented by collaborations with artists and designers on projects and public exhibitions that explore the creative underpinnings of the scientific process as a fundamental ingredient of innovation.
