Michele Rivas
Doctoral student
Syracuse University
Michele Rivas, MS, NCC is a doctoral student in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Syracuse University. Her scholarly interests include working with people with disabilities, multicultural counseling competencies, and disability rhetoric in the counseling discourse. Michele assists faculty in the instruction of master’s level classes in her academic department and serves as a clinical supervisor for counselors who are entering the profession. She currently practices as a professional counselor in a community setting serving clients with disabilities. This practice grounds her view of the counseling work, and strongly informs her view of counselor education as a discipline. As an emerging Feminist Disability Studies scholar, Michele seeks to re-center and legitimize disability in the mental health discourse, honoring the voices of those who have been historically silenced. Michele is also involved in leadership initiatives in the counseling area, serving as the Vice-President 2014-2015 of her Sigma Upsilon Chapter of counseling honor society Chi Sigma Iota.
