Associate Professor, Sorghum and Corn Diseases
Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center
I have conducted field, greenhouse, and laboratory research primarily on sorghum and corn diseases at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension center at Corpus Christi since 1979. As a member of the USAID/CRSP INTSORMIL program for over 15 years, I traveled yearly from 1985 to 1999 to four Southern Africa countries to collaborate with international and country research scientists on sorghum and pearl millet disease problems. After sorghum ergot was confirmed in the western hemisphere in 1995-96 I became very active in international research and phytosanitary efforts regarding the causal pathogen, Claviceps africana. Once sorghum ergot swept through multiple sorghum producing states of the U.S. in 1997 I conducted domestic research projects on the disease and continued collaborative international research efforts. This also included activity regarding commercial production of hybrid sorghum seed in the U.S. and phytosanitary issues involving international movement of that seed.
