Stephen F. Austin State University
Dr. David Creech, professor emeritus of agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University and director of SFA Gardens, joined the university as an assistant professor of horticulture in 1978. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, SFA’s Mast Arboretum, the Ruby and Gayla Mize Azalea Gardens, and Jimmy Hinds Park. Creech's dedication to horticulture has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Honorary Membership Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association and the Sidney Meadows Award for Distinguished Achievement from the Southern Region of the International Plant Propagator’s Society. Beyond overseeing SFA’s 60 acres of campus gardens, Creech is deeply involved in research initiatives, focusing on new woody ornamental plants, kiwifruit production viability in East Texas, and developing salt and hurricane-tolerant plant materials for the Gulf Coast.
