Steven Blum is the senior vice president of engineering and safety for Universal Parks and Resorts’ Creative team. In this role, Mr. Blum serves at the technical focal point for all Universal theme park engineering activities. He oversees and maintains ride and show safety standards, supervises technical personnel at world-wide planning and development entities, governs technical oversight of engineered show and ride systems, represents Universal’s technical interests in legislative matters and salient codes and standards organizations, and oversees Universal’s Patent Program. Mr. Blum has worked in theme park engineering for 27 years, including positions as senior project engineer for the Walt Disney Imagineering/EuroDisney project, director of engineering for Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Japan projects, and senior director of engineering for Universal Creative. Mr. Blum also held various positions in aerospace engineering, completing service in that field as senior research specialist for special technologies and projects at Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Development Projects Division (Skunk Works). Mr. Blum is a graduate of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York with a bachelor of mechanical engineering degree. He also completed graduate work in computational fluid dynamics at California State University. Mr. Blum is currently an executive committee member of ASTM’s F24 Committee for Amusement Rides and Devices, and is past chair and present member of both the IAAPA Global and North American Safety Committees. He also served on the Society of Automotive and Aerospace Engineers as well as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
