Professor and Head, Computer Engineering; Director of Global Outreach, Center of Cybersecurity
Rochester Institute of Technology

Dr. S. Jay Yang is a Professor and the Department Head for the Department of Computer Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology. He also serves as the Director of Global Outreach for RIT’s Center of Cybersecurity. His research group has developed several pioneering machine learning, attack modeling, and simulation systems to provide predictive analysis of cyberattacks, enabling anticipatory or proactive cyber defense. Currently, his team is developing a suite of systems: ASSERT integrates Bayesian-based learning with entropy-enabled clustering to generate and refine attack models based on observed malicious activities; CASCADES employs contextual models and extracts behavior traits from limited data to simulate how attack scenarios might transpire; CAPTURE overcomes limitations of imbalanced, insufficient, and insignificant data to forecast cyberattacks before they happen using unconventional signals in the public domain. Dr. Yang has published more than sixty papers and worked on more than fifteen sponsored research projects. In addition to research, he was a key contributor to the development of two Ph.D. programs at RIT and established several global educational partnership programs. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001.
