A native of Oberlin, Louisiana, Kevin received his B.A. in history from Louisiana College and his M.A. in history from Tulane University, where he studied with the noted historian of popular culture Bill C. Malone and where he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. He also studied at the University of London. Fontenot taught history for 12 years at Tulane and was awarded the John Dwyer Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2021, he was awarded the Ann Richards Legacy Award for his work with the Ann Richards School in Austin, Texas. Kevin is the co-editor of Accordions, Fiddles, Two Step, and Swing: A Cajun Music Reader (2006) and has contributed chapters to Country Music Goes to War, Louisiana Fiddlers, Shreveport Sounds in Black and White, Ethnic and Border Music, and Louisiana Women. He has been a regular speaker at the Louisiana Historical Association, the Central Texas Historical Association, and the International Country Music Conference. He also has served as program chair and a board member of the Louisiana Historical Association. An avid camper, Kevin has led 10 student hiking and whitewater rafting trips in the Grand Canyon. He currently resides in Austin, Texas.
