Dwonna Goldstone
Associate Professor of History and the Director of African American Studies
Texas State University
Dwonna is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of African American Studies at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Originally from Moline, Illinois (home of the John Deere Tractor), she holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from the University of Iowa, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin. Before becoming a college professor, Dwonna taught high school English, coached ninth-grade girls’ basketball, and boys’ and girls’ high school track. Her book Integrating the 40 Acres: The Fifty-Year Struggle for Racial Integration at the University of Texas (University of Georgia Press 2006) won the Coral H. Tullis Memorial Prize for the best book on Texas history. Her editorial on the University of Texas’ school song, “The Eyes of Texas,” can be found online. Dwonna is currently working on a book — tentatively titled Strong, Black, Bitter, and Cold — which is a collection of essays about African American life and culture. In her spare time, she trains for half marathons, does CrossFit, and spends lots of time walking her four dogs — Lena Horne, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, and Ralph Ellison. She also loves to watch Judge Judy.
