Katie Jarrett
Certified Triathlon Coach
Dedicated Not Serious
After 10 years working with the Space Shuttle Program, Katie left NASA to resume her interrupted college degree. With a degree in statistics and operations research in hand, she went back to the agency and began working in the Space Station Program. She eventually left that program to raise her grandson with her husband, Rob. Katie later developed an odd interest in triathlons and decided to give it a try, despite having no athletic ability whatsoever. She and Rob did their first triathlon, a quarter-distance race — now revamped a bit and called an Olympic distance — in 2008. That blossomed into a desire to learn more about body mechanics and injury prevention, and Katie became an American College of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer. She began by training older clients in weightlifting, mentoring under Kingwood-area strength coach Andy Baker. A few triathlons later, she learned that training programs for running, swimming, or biking were not written for the older, inexperienced athlete who needed kinder, gentler training plans. As a result, Katie became a certified triathlon coach.
