Vice Admiral Michael F. McAllister assumed Command of Coast Guard Pacific Area in Alameda, California on June 30th 2021. He serves as the operational commander for all U.S. Coast Guard missions from the Rocky Mountains to the waters off the East Coast of Africa. He concurrently serves as Commander, Defense Force West and provides Coast Guard operational support to the Department of Defense and Combatant Commanders. Vice Admiral McAllister reports to Pacific Area from his previous position as Deputy Commandant for Mission Support at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. where he led all human resources, engineering and logistics, C4I, acquisitions, training and education, and security functions. In previous flag assignments Vice Admiral McAllister served as Commander, Seventeenth Coast Guard District in Alaska, as the Deputy Director of Operations for United States Northern Command and as the Director for Enterprise Strategy and Management. He served throughout his career in a variety of operational assignments, both afloat and ashore. He served three tours aboard Coast Guard cutters, including command of two patrol boats. From 2000 to 2003, Vice Admiral McAllister served as Chief, Response Division at Coast Guard Activities New York where he led maritime response and security operations following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York City. He also served as Commander of Coast Guard Sector Charleston, South Carolina where he prototyped the Department of Homeland Security’s successful Interagency Operations Center Program. His staff assignments reflect broad experience in critical Coast Guard supporting functions including civil engineering, budgeting and program review, and personnel assignments. He was also the Executive Assistant to the Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard and the Executive Director for the Deputy Commandant for Mission Support. Vice Admiral McAllister attended the United States Coast Guard Academy, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He received a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a Masters of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a member of the Sloan Fellows Program. He has earned numerous personal, unit, team and Service awards. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Washington.
