CAPT Anthony “Tony” Butera was raised in West Springfield, Virginia. A 1993 graduate of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, he also holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and was the 2006-07 Chief of Naval Operations Federal Executive Fellow to the RAND Corporation. His operational tours include assignments as Strike Warfare Officer and First Lieutenant, USS Barry (DDG 52); Combatting Terrorism Branch Chief and Flag Briefer, Commander Sixth Fleet staff, embarked in USS LaSalle (AGF 3); and Deputy Director of Intelligence, Joint Special Operations Task Force 5-35 in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, & New Dawn in Bagram, Afghanistan. He was the Commander of the Joint Targets Squadron, an element of Joint Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and his major command assignment was as Commander, Joint Intelligence Operations Center, United States Strategic Command, Offutt AFB, Nebraska. Ashore assignments include duty as Director of Intelligence and Information Operations (N2N39) for U.S. Pacific Fleet; Commander, Joint Intelligence Operations Center, United States Strategic Command; Director of Intelligence (SOJ2) for Special Operations Command Pacific; Deputy Director Intelligence and Information Operations for Resources and Administration (N21) for U.S. Pacific Fleet; Combatant Command Desk Officer and Crisis Operations Team Lead at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); Targeting Directorate (J2T) Counterterrorism Operations & Plans Chief and Deputy Executive Assistant for the Director of Intelligence (J2), the Joint Staff; and China Navy Branch Chief, Joint Intelligence Center Pacific. CAPT Butera was acting Chief of Staff, Carrier Strike Group ONE for two months prior to assuming Information Warfare Commander in March of 2021. Qualified as a surface warfare officer, information warfare officer, and Navy space cadre, over his career he has earned three naval intelligence community-wide awards: the Naval Intelligence Junior Officer of the Year (ashore), the Rear Admiral Edwin T. Layton Award for Leadership and Mentorship, and the Vice Admiral Rufus L. Taylor Award for Leadership. He also was awarded the CIA Seal Medal and has earned several individual, unit, and campaign awards..
