John Giorgis is the Director of Performance, Evaluation, and Enterprise Risk in the Office of the Secretary at the US Department of Transportation. In this role, he also serves as USDOT’s Chief Risk Officer, Chief Evaluation Officer, and Performance Improvement Officer-Designate. He is responsible for leading programs of performance improvement, program evaluation, and enterprise risk management for the Department. He originally joined US DOT in 2005 as a Presidential Management Fellow in the Federal Transit Administration where he worked on performance, program evaluation, enterprise risk, strategic planning, and management of FTA’s National Transit Database Program. Prior to joining US DOT he spent the first six years of his career as an economist at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, where he was also chairperson of the United States Subcommittee on Transportation and Warehousing Subcommittee in discussions with the governments of Canada and Mexico on developing harmonized economic statistics for the North American Product Classification System. John grew up near Buffalo and Syracuse in upstate New York and holds a bachelor’s in economics and geology from Case Western Reserve University and a master’s in applied economics from Johns Hopkins University. In his free time, he is an active volunteer with Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America) and he loves to travel, especially when he is able to add to his lifetime count of having visited 341 out of the 433 areas in the US National Park System. He lives in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife, Sara, and three adorable children, ages 14, 11, and 8.
