Steve Mathews serves as the Technical Advisor for the Cybersecurity Division at the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Hosting and Compute Directorate (J-9). In this role, he focuses on addressing critical technological gaps, training staff for emerging technologies, and advising on strategic initiatives across the agency such as zero trust, Microsoft Defender for Server, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, the Logging Compliance, and Review Service, Vulnerability Management Services, and Information Systems Security Manager as a Service. Mathews held several security roles at DISA between 2011-2022. He began his career as an Information Systems Security Officer working security baselines and audits before becoming a security compliance lead, the Information Systems Security Manager for the Tinker Air Force Base DISA Datacenter, and more recently, the J-9 Endpoint Security Services Chief and Program Manager for VMS. In this role, he led a team that managed endpoint security tools and policies for more than 35,000 systems. In 2022, he modernized the service by expanding availability to commercial cloud and DISA’s private cloud solution, Stratus for IL4/5/6, and was one of the first services from J-9 available to most mission partners across the globe. Mathews also held ISSO and contractor roles for the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Center at Fort Sill, previously managing the installation Bluecoat web proxy, wireless wardriving program, and WIDS/IDS platforms. He also has extensive experience managing both critical IT systems as a Senior Systems Administrator and combat hardware simulation platforms as a Field Tech for Army classrooms such as the Call for Fire Trainer, Stinger, and Howitzer simulators.
