Shane Butler
Principal Geologist, Integrated Analytical Solutions

Shane K. Butler, a University of North Dakota EERC Principal Geologist, leads the Natural Materials Analytical Research Laboratory and advances analytical techniques for unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, shales, and other tight formations. His expertise includes X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry, clay mineralogy, CCUS-related characterization, desulfurization materials, and archaeological applications. He holds an M.S. in Geology from the University of Illinois and dual bachelor’s degrees from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Butler is a Geological Society of America member, served on the Clay Minerals Society council, and has authored numerous scientific publications.
