Mark Priebe
Acting Inspector General
Dept of Education Office of Inspector General

Mark Elmer Priebe serves as the Deputy Inspector General Delegated the Duties of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Education. In November 2025, President Donald J. Trump notified Congress of his intent to designate Mr. Priebe—then Director of Non-Federal Audit at the Department’s Office of Inspector General—as Acting Inspector General pursuant to 5 U.S.C. 403 note, with the designation becoming effective no less than 30 days after that notification. He assumed the role on December 7, 2025, and now leads the OIG’s independent oversight of the Department’s programs and operations, including audits, investigations, evaluations, and other activities that promote integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness in federal education programs. Prior to his designation as Acting Inspector General, Mr. Priebe served as Director of the Non-Federal Audit Team and National Single Audit Coordinator, where he oversaw the Department’s implementation of the Single Audit Act and led quality-control reviews of audits performed by independent public accountants and State auditors. He also directed the Financial Statement Oversight Team, providing executive leadership for the OIG’s oversight of the Department’s financial statement audit and related assurance work. In these roles, he developed audit guides, reviewed complex audit and attestation engagements, delivered training, and represented the OIG in engagements with auditors, federal partners, and professional organizations to advance audit quality and accountability.
