Michael Peterson Manager, Green River Valley Water District Hart County, Kentucky Michael Peterson is a water professional with over 20 years of experience in the rural water industry. As Plant Manager for Green River Valley Water District, he oversees the operation of two water treatment facilities serving multiple counties in south-central Kentucky. Michael began his career at the age of 16, working on a waterline installation project for Mammoth Cave National Park. He started his water treatment career with Northeast Knox Utility District in Knoxville, Tennessee, before moving to Nashville Metro Water Services, where he worked at the Omohundro Water Treatment Facility. These early experiences helped shape his deep commitment to operational excellence and reliable service delivery. In his current role, Michael has led his team to multiple “Best Tasting Water in Kentucky” awards, including a second-place national finish. Most recently, Green River Valley Water District successfully assumed operations of the former Wax Water Treatment Plant from Edmonson County. Under Michael’s leadership, the previously troubled facility now operates with zero violations. Beyond his local responsibilities, Michael is passionate about expanding access to clean, safe drinking water globally. He is actively involved in mission work in Brazil, where he and his team are developing modular water treatment systems for rural communities. Michael is also the founder of “The Water Mafia,” an initiative dedicated to mentoring and developing the next generation of rural water professionals. He is a strong advocate for rural water systems and improving infrastructure, training, and sustainability both locally and internationally.
