Mr. Petermeyer administers the Occupational Safety and Health Act in the eight-state Southeast region: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi (federal enforcement) and Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee (state plans). Mr. Petermeyer has over 26 years of federal service, including more than 22 years with OSHA. He served as an industrial hygienist, as a safety specialist, an assistant area director, area director, and deputy regional administrator. Mr. Petermeyer also served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA from January–March 2019. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Petermeyer handled over 150 fatality and catastrophe investigations and emergency response efforts. He served as the lead investigator on one of the largest OSHA cases in history, involving the Imperial Sugar combustible dust explosion in Port Wentworth, GA. Mr. Petermeyer earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Environmental Health from Illinois State University. He is a Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator (CFEI) by the National Association of Fire Investigators and was formerly certified by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. He is a 2013 graduate of the Federal Executive Institute (FEI), Charlottesville, Virginia. He also served in the U. S. Army Active Duty for four years and four years reserve.
