Colonel Derek Lane currently serves as the Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Communication- and Electronics School. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-6 for Marine Corps Forces, Central Command in Tampa, Florida. Colonel Lane’s most recent prior assignments include: Commanding Officer of 8th Communication Battalion in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Assistant Chief of Staff, G-6 for the Second Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Office of Military Cooperation-Kuwait as the U.S. Military Advisor to the Kuwait Armed Forces J3 and J6; U.S. Special Operations Command J6 as the Executive Officer to the J6/CIO; Communications Officer for the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Colonel Derek Lane was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on 12 July 1996, after graduating from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He subsequently attended The Basic School where he was designated as a Communications Officer. Colonel Lane’s professional military education includes The Basic School (1997), Communication Information Systems Officer Course (1998), Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School (2003), U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (2009), the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JPME II) (2012), and service as the Commandant of the Marine Corps Fellow to Yale University in International Security Studies (2017). He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Justice Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Military Arts & Sciences. Colonel Lane’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star.
