Janet Herrin joined BPA’s leadership team as chief operating officer in January 2017. Herrin is responsible for Power Services; Transmission Services; Environment, Fish and Wildlife; Customer Support Services; and the Business Transformation Office. Herrin came to BPA from the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., where she served as a senior adviser to the secretary, providing strategic counsel on rapidly changing industry issues. She has also worked closely with BPA, including on its development of a best-in-class human resources organization. Herrin previously spent 35 years at the Tennessee Valley Authority, where she began her career as a civil engineer and advanced to chief administrative officer. In that role, she led efforts to strengthen the safety culture; improve employee engagement; recruit and maintain a talented and diverse workforce; and implement successful cost-management efforts. Before becoming chief administrative officer, Herrin was senior vice president of River Operations, where she directed the operation and maintenance of TVA’s 29 hydroelectric dams, 20 non-power dams, one pumped storage plant and 14 navigation locks on the 650-mile Tennessee River system. She has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; a Master of Science in civil engineering from Colorado State University; and a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and physics from Willamette University. She was a registered professional engineer in Tennessee. In addition, she has served as a voluntary board member of Bicentennial Volunteers, a not-for-profit organization that helps TVA and other governmental agencies fulfill their missions through public-service projects and gives TVA retirees paid and volunteer service opportunities. She also served on the TVA Retirements System Board and numerous public service boards.
