JOHN GULOTTA began his career in the fire service in 1988 and joined the Tucson (AZ) Fire Department (TFD) in 1997. He was promoted to captain in 2005 and in 2009, became the first captain to hold the position of Health and Safety Program Coordinator within TFD. He was Firefighter of the Year in 2012 and the recipient of the Fire Chief’s Award in 2016. He chairs the Southern Arizona Safety committee. Starting in 2015, he has represented the TFD and collaborated with the University of Arizona in several studies funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to examine the link between occupational toxins and increased rates of cancer in firefighters and to develop best practices for cancer prevention. He is the TFD representative for the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study, to develop and test a framework for establishing a long-term firefighter multicenter prospective cohort study on exposures to cancer and effective means to reduce exposures. He has assisted TFD in implementing three exposure prevention interventions: post-fire wash-down, engineers on air, and maintaining a clean cab.
