State Auditor
MA Office of State Auditor
Suzanne M. Bump, the 25th Auditor of the Commonwealth, is the first woman to serve in this role in the state’s history, and was sworn into office in January 2011. As Auditor, she has prioritized effective management of public resources to improve public trust in government. Since taking office, she has been a leader in the modernization of government services. She led the development of advanced data analytics tools and the ongoing integration of these technologies into audits and investigations in order to focus on the areas of greatest risk and thus provide impactful recommendations that improve government agency performance. She has also established an IT audit unit to assist agencies in protecting their technological assets. She’s also championed efforts to strengthen social safety net programs and she has encouraged public entities and policymakers to pursue long-term planning when setting agency goals, rather than seeking short-term fixes. Bump and her office have received national recognition for their work. In 2016, the office received an National State Auditors Association Excellence in Accountability Award for an audit that identified record waste in MassHealth, as well as the Association of Government Accountants’ Einhorn Gary Award for contributions to furthering government accountability. She was appointed to serve on the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s Domestic Working Group to advise the U.S. Comptroller General. In addition, she and her team were awarded the 2016 National Association of State Chief Information Officers Recognition Award for improving state operations for their development and use of data analytics tools.
