Greg Griffis leads the strategic direction for Cox's core network organization overseeing architecture, design, sustaining, and operations in his role as Executive Director Network Engineering and Operations. These critical areas of Cox's network include the national IP/MPLS, DWDM backbone and metro networks, next generation datacenter networking and security, and core Content Distribution Networks. At Cox, Griffis has led many network transformations for Cox including implementation of Cox's first settlement free Internet peering, redesign of the backbone edge, transition to open source based CDN, long haul DWDM transition to a CDC based architecture, and design of a next generation datacenter/security platform to support virtualization. These initiatives not only evolved the network to be ahead of the growing requirements of Cox's entire product line but also led to savings well over $150M. In 2018, he was awarded the Governor James Cox award given by Alex Taylor, President and CEO of Cox Enterprises. With 20 years of experience in telecommunications, Greg is not only a strategic business leader but also a technologist at his core. During his 17 years at Cox Communications, he has held several roles including Backbone Operations Engineer, Peering Coordinator, Design Engineer, and technical leadership of increasing scope. Greg joined Cox from Nortel Networks, where he worked in systems engineering and hardware design roles. Prior to Nortel, he was a member of Delta Airlines engineering department. Griffis holds a BEE degree with specialization in Telecommunications from Georgia Tech. He also earned a certificate in Engineering Entrepreneurship from Georgia Tech. He lives in Roswell, GA with his wife Ellie and three children.
