Mr. Garland serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Pattern Energy and Pattern Development, a position he has held since he co-founded Pattern Energy Group (Pattern) in 2009. Mr. Garland oversees all aspects of Pattern Energy and Pattern Development, but his efforts are largely focused on corporate and industry strategy, capital formation, market and project selection, corporate performance and corporate culture. He is based out of the San Francisco office. For over 30 years, Mr. Garland’s career has focused on developing, constructing, managing, and investing in energy and infrastructure projects in the United States and around the world. He closed his first wind project financing in 1989, and has since successfully managed or oversaw the development, investment and operations of nearly 10,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects worldwide and nearly $50 billion of infrastructure assets. Prior to joining Pattern, Mr. Garland was a partner at Babcock & Brown from 1986 to 2009. As leader of Babcock & Brown’s North American Infrastructure Group, he initiated and was responsible for project finance activities, energy project development and investment, and energy and infrastructure funds management for institutional investors. Previously, Mr. Garland worked for the State of California as Chief of Energy Assessments from 1975 to 1986. Mr. Garland and his wife Gigi co-founded The Bay School, a high school in San Francisco that focuses on technology and ethics. They also support the University of California, Berkeley’s Physics Department and the University of Washington’s Medical School. Mr. Garland sits as an active Trustee of the University of California, Berkeley Foundation, is a board member of SteelRiver infrastructure fund manager, and has authored several books and articles on energy and finance.
