David Brown Kinloch has worked in small hydropower development for the last 33 years. He is President of Appalachian Hydro Associates, Inc., President of Lock 12 Hydro Partners, LLC, President of Shaker Landing Hydro Associates, Inc., and President/CEO of Lock 7 Hydro Partners, LLC . He holds both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering, as well as two other degrees, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Brown Kinloch installed the first small hydro plant in Kentucky in 1989 at the Weisenberger Mill. In 2004, he and his partners purchase a retired 2 MW hydro plant on the Kentucky River, and did a $2.5 million renovation of the Mother Ann Lee Hydroelectric Station, which has been fully operational for 10 years. In 2012, he received a federal Dept. of Energy grant and install the first variable speed generator at a hydro plant in the U.S., as a small-scale demonstration project at the Weisenberger Mill. The success of that variable speed technology demonstration project has led to development of the new full-scale 2.64 MW project at Lock 12 on the Kentucky River in Ravenna, Kentucky. Mr. Brown Kinloch is now working on the development of three more nearly identical projects on the Kentucky River. Mr. Brown Kinloch serves as the Project Manager of the Ravenna Hydroelectric Project presented in this paper.
