Leslie Ellis is a tech writer focused on explaining complex engineering stuff for people who have less of a natural interest than engineers. She’s perhaps best known for her long-running weekly column in Multichannel News called “Translation Please,” and currently writes a recurring column for Broadband Library called “Nerdy Little Secrets.” She’s written two broadband dictionaries, a field guide to broadband, and is a behind-the-scenes tech translator for domestic and global service providers, networks, and suppliers. She began in the industry we used to call “cable" in 1987, writing hardware and software manuals for an advertising insertion company. She served as Managing Editor of Communications Engineering & Design (CED) Magazine from 1990-1994; as Senior Technology Editor for Multichannel News/Broadband Week from 1994-1998; and as Senior Technology Analyst for Paul Kagan Associates from 1998 until she founded Ellis Edits Inc, in 2000. She received an NCTA Vanguard Award for Associates & Affiliates in 2005, and was named Technology Woman of the Year by the SCTE and WICT in 2010. In 2019, she was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. Outside of work, she’s a beekeeper, a filmmaker (“Cable@60,” a decade-by-decade documentary about the industry, and “BEE PEOPLE: Get Stung,” about backyard beekeepers), and sings harmony and plays guitar in a Colorado-based classic rock cover band called “SkwarePegs."
