Balasubramanian (Balsu) Lakshmanan is a Staff Researcher and the Engineering Group Manager for the fuel cell materials product integration team at the global powertrain division in General Motors Company. Balsu earned his B. Tech in Chemical and Electrochemical Engineering from Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI) India and Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering from University of South Carolina. The primary focus of his team is to integrate state of the art catalysts, gas diffusion layer and other materials into the best in class fuel cell membrane electrode assembly (MEA). His team is also responsible for understanding the system interactions of these best in class MEAs to define operating conditions that can lead to optimal performance and durability. Balsu has been working on developing nanoscale coatings as a replacement for gold in fuel cell bipolar plates for over 10 years and was responsible for identifying and implementing the coating for the next generation commercial fuel cell systems in the GM-Honda joint development. He was the recipient of the 2008 Chairman’s Award, which recognizes “Best of the Best” accomplishments within GM and GM research McCuen award in 2009 for root causing early failures in fuel cell fleet. Balsu was invited by the National Academy of Engineers (NAE) to attend US and European Union frontiers of engineering symposium in November 2010 and 2013, respectively. He has seven peer reviewed journal publications, 29 issued patents and 17 additional patent applications.
