Andrea Claire is a licensed architect and an accomplished artist whose early career was developed at the esteemed firms of Frank Gehry, Vito Acconci, and the Rockwell Group, amongst others. In 2011, with an inspiration to create original lighting designs, Andrea launched her eponymous brand, Andrea Claire Studio. Throughout her life, Andrea had been moved and inspired by art. Her great, great, grandfather was renowned Dutch painter B.J. Blommers of the Rembrandt school, and growing up Andrea remembers being charmed by his paintings of scenes from the Dutch life. It seemed only fitting, that Andrea’s first lighting prototype would be influenced by a series of paintings she was creating at the time in her Williamsburg, Brooklyn studio. Andrea had spent many years developing her own signature, abstract shapes while working with acrylic paint and hard-edge painting techniques. She became fascinated by the challenge of turning these forms into 3D expressions in space, the result of which is her glowing ‘Polyhedron’ and the kit-of-parts armature. Her debut collection, named Constantin, was the first to feature Andrea’s proprietary method, using both state of the art technology and old fashioned craft. The original collection included a mobile chandelier that would defy expectations by also serving as a floating sculpture. When turned off, the polyhedrons appear solid but when illuminated, they transform into glowing light bodies. Andrea’s designs were met with acclaim and additional product launches and project-based collaborations with noteworthy architects and designers such as Jean Louis Deniot, Robert A.M. Stern, and Victoria Hagan followed. In 2018, Andrea expanded to Los Angeles and opened her second studio in the city’s Silver Lake neighborhood.
