Superior Tray Systems: Celebrating 20 Years of Innovation

Superior Tray Systems Inc. (STS) specializes in manufacturing CSA certified, UL listed cable bus and cable tray. Cable bus provides a reliable electrical power distribution system as an alternative to bus bars, bus ducts, cable raceways, and electrical conduits. STS is a privately owned business, and was established in 1996.

Located in Surrey, British Columbia, Superior Tray Systems was first established as a custom metalworking and machining shop. The company expanded into the power distribution market in 2004 with the launch of their Superior Bus product line. Throughout the years their products and services have expanded, but their core value of producing quality products through innovation has remained the same.

In 2009, the company supplied 19km of maintenance integrated walkways for the Canada Line rapid transit system in Vancouver, BC. This innovative concept combines a high traction aluminum decking with an enclosure for electrical cables, which reduces material costs and greatly saves on installation labour. A patent has since been awarded for this time and cost saving design.

Over the years, the company has invested heavily in automation to achieve one of the fastest delivery times of cable bus in the market. "Automation reduces production time, while maintaining our high quality", said Martin Cox, lead designer and president. In 2010, the company acquired an LVD Omega 1500 Fabricating center. The self-loading 30 metric ton press is equipped with a 40 station turret and 6 auto-indexes. Punching capacity was doubled from 1/4" to 1/2" aluminum plate, giving customers an increased range of product offerings.

In 2012, a large bed CNC router with 8 station tool changer was installed to achieve more efficient material usage and improve production speed. This expansion further reduced an already short lead time for Superior Bus products, and allowed material usage savings to be passed on to clients.

The in-house design and construction of a cable tray welding cell was well underway by 2014. The automation project was completed fully in-house, and allowed for high repeatability and rapid throughput of ladder tray.

Most recently in 2015, the company released their fully automated drawing packages for Superior Bus. Software routines were written to convert a rough sketch into a full 3D drawing package ready for production. What was typically a 2-day turnaround is now achievable in the space of 1 hour.  Their designers are now free to more quickly answer customer inquiries and provide an even higher level of customer service.

Superior Tray is proud to be in business for 20 years. In the decades to come, they plan to continue exceeding clients’ expectations.
