Recognizing the need for the cable industry to be proactive in the Internet of things (IoT) marketplace, the SCTE•ISBE Engineering Committee created a working group to focus on IoT. The group is part of the Data Standards Subcommittee (DSS) and is facilitating communication between service providers and industry partners to standardize new IoT based services, while being focused on making standards and operational practices deployable and manageable for service providers. The group is adapting use cases available in the IoT community to service provider’s business objectives. An overall architecture reference model is being created along with use cases for connected health, home monitoring, security, and smart roads/cities. The working group is led by Kinney Bacon from Cox Communications and has support from many service providers including Charter, Comcast, Midco, Rogers and Shaw, along with significant participation by interested hardware and software providers.
