Impulse Technology, a technology start-up, has developed a thermal energy harvester small enough to fit on a wireless sensor network board and power it by converting near-ambient temperature waste heat to electricity. In 10 years, wireless sensor networks (WSN) will include 40 billion everyday objects with wireless capabilities. Power management of this vast ‘Internet of Things’ will be unsustainable, since battery changing cost increases with network size, particularly for remote or hazardous installations. Our technology exploits micro-scale thermoelectrics (TE) which is environmentally green with no emission, maintenance or hazardous materials. Our prototype is ready for demonstration in WSN, providing a solution to the cost/challenges of battery changes and wire runs. Our product does not, unlike existing products, need any external cooling, yet maintains large temperature differential to provide 10 times more electric power for the same size. Higher efficiency without the need for a heatsink or cooling system saves weight, space, and money. Our team is experienced in MEMS design, nanofabrication, start-up management, and angel investment.
