Although most well-known for Jelly Belly® jelly bean in more than 100 flavors, Jelly Belly Candy Company also manufactures more than 50 fine candies, including Organic Jelly Beans and Fruit Flavored Snacks, BeanBoozled® Jelly Beans, candy corn, mellocremes, jells, gummies, sour confections, chocolate covered items, and more than 50 seasonal sweets. The company’s Sport Beans®, a sports performance chew, is popular with athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
The company traces its roots back to 1869 when Gustav Goelitz began making candy in Belleville, Ill. In 1898, Gustav’s sons formed their own company, which continues to operate today as Jelly Belly Candy Company.
Though the company specialized in mellocremes like Candy Corn for many years, it diversified its product line in the 1960s, introducing – among other treats – a candy innovation: jelly beans with flavor and color in the center as well as the outside shell. This was the precursor to the Jelly Belly jelly bean, which debuted in 1976. Jelly Belly jelly beans exploded in popularity in the 1980s, helped by President Ronald Reagan, who made them a staple in the Oval Office.
Today, Jelly Belly products are sold all over the world, and the company remains family-owned and operated by the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of the family. In total, there are 11 family members currently working in the company.
