METALCON 2022

WORKSHOP - Game Plan Your Fall Plan (Room Room 138)

13 Oct 22
8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Louis Pasteur is credited with the phrase, “Chance favors the prepared mind”.  I doubt he was thinking of fall protection at the time, but his advice certainly drives home the importance of planning high-risk tasks on a project.  Since falls are the #1 killer in construction (by far), it is imperative that we devote resources to this exposure.

This 3-hr. session will discuss (Fed. OSHA) fall protection requirements and options for metal building construction.  These rules are significantly different from other fall protection exposures on the jobsite.  In fact, so much so that often we have a hard time with clients understanding or accepting our fall plan.  Throughout our discussions, we will focus more so on what methods can be used & when, and not so much on specific products.

Topics will include:

  • OSHA’s focus on fall protection in construction
  • Special (Fed. OSHA) fall protection requirements for steel & metal building erection
  • Educating clients on these unique requirements – there’s a good reason for the “15 ft. rule”
  • Metal building fall exposures & protection options (& we’ll compare/contrast with other trades)
  • Special rules for connecting structural steel
  • Controlled decking zones & leading edge systems
  • Special personal fall arrest system (PFAS) considerations, incl. fall distance & rescue planning
  • Where your competent person fits into this

As a safety director & trainer, I know that you will be able to make good use of this material in several important facets of your business:  planning, bidding, OSHA compliance, & marketing to name a few.  Loss can come in many forms.  Don’t fall prey to shutdowns, injuries, fines, inaccurate bids, or even hits to your reputation.  Have a good plan, and chances are you’ll be preparing for a successful, profitable project.
