The Vatican Observatory is Vatican City State’s astrophysics research institute, originally founded because of the calendar reform in 1582. Science in general, and astrophysics in particular, transform our world in many ways. We shall examine the subtler of these changes using the Vatican Observatory as a backdrop. Scientists immerse themselves in the Book of Creation. How does it affect them? Cosmic symbolism is an important component of religious language. Astrophysical infrastructure, including the Vatican Observatory’s, is becoming directly perceptive of a universe of change. The heavens are no longer a symbol of changeless eternity. Are the forces of the collective unconscious unhinged by science’s inadvertent tinkering with cosmic symbolism? For more information, visit vaticanobservatory.va.
