Shade Cloth for Human Protection (Room S210B)

02 Oct 19
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM

Tracks: Case Study Sessions, Classroom Education

What is shade cloth and how effective is it in fulfilling its intended purpose? How long does it last, and how should it be properly fabricated and installed? Starting with the basic construction of different types of knitted polyethylene shade cloth, the presenter will show how variances in the type of knit matrix affect physical parameters (tear and tensile strength) and the degree of solar protection (UVR Block and Heat transmitted), with supporting test data. The long-term impact of UV exposure on yarn strength and color fastness will also be discussed in the context of changes to the chemical composition of stabilizers designed to meet European REACH and California Proposition 65 standards.
