Tracks: Operational Strategies

Access to high-quality, unfiltered operational data is essential if wind energy operators are to take advantage of advances in digitalized O&M, maintain long-term performance, predict failures and bring down the levelized cost of energy (LCoE). Currently, however, asset owners, operators and ISPs face significant challenges in accessing turbine O&M data. Often what had been assumed to be accessible turns out not to be, and data that was thought to be available for analysis is, on closer inspection, encrypted. Levels of access granted to turbine data vary across the market. Some OEMs allow significant access to data, while others may limit access to a highly-processed subset of data, or allow no access at all. For example, of the top eleven condition monitoring system (CMS) hardware providers – accounting for over 80% of the market – only one gives full access to CMS data, with seven providing no access whatsoever. Turbine owners have a right to the data produced by the machines they own, furthermore, blocking their access to the data may be illegal under European competition law. Faced with this challenge, over the next six months ONYX InSight will bring together a Data Access Working Group, consisting of leading turbine owners, investors, ISPs and lawyers, to tackle this challenge head on. At WindPower in Houston, ONYX InSight and its partners will outline the results of this campaign to date and lay out a definitive roadmap for better data access in wind energy.
