Micro-organisms, whether they are bacteria, viruses or fungi, impact our everyday lives in a variety of detrimental ways. We know that the active wear and socks in our gym bag are going to smell, grow mildew and degrade if we don't control the level of bacterial activity. One of the major challenges in all hospitals and healthcare clinics today is how to control the number of infections being acquired by patients visiting for totally different reasons. Such hospital acquired infections lead to delayed healing, longer and more costly hospital stays and thousands of deaths per year! How can antimicrobial textiles assist in controlling or preventing such detrimental outcomes? This presentation reviews the ways of adding antimicrobial performance to medical textiles. It addresses the costs and the durability of alternative strategies and asks the question how to combat the evolving micro-organisms that are becoming increasingly drug resistant.
