This class is about creating the most effective tool on the fireground: the engine company. Students rotate through the following scenarios. In Basic Skills of the Nozzle Team, discussed are basic concepts such as hoseloads, nozzle selection, stretch estimation, demonstration of the functions of the nozzle/backup/door positions, and line placement. In Pre-Entry Operations, students gain an understanding of usefulness/limitations of preconnected and static loads. Loads and stretches reinforce pre-entry operation principles and discipline, problem solving for getting water to the nozzle, short stretches, line placement, and stretch estimation. In Transitional Attack, students deploy large-diameter hoselines and explore techniques to maximize the effectiveness of personnel and equipment for heavy fire conditions on arrival. In Bread-and-Butter Operations, students use interior attack strategies and advance an initial 1¾-handline and backup line for a typical residential fire scenario. The focus is on line movement and management, proper nozzle technique, teamwork, and communications. In Managing the Interior 2½, students use interior attack strategies and advance an initial 2½-inch handline for a typical commercial fire scenario. Emphasis is on line movement and management, proper nozzle technique, teamwork, communications, and staffing.
