Many women have the strength, the ambition, and the intelligence to be great firefighters. However, many lack the confidence to take that first step. We can help other women gain the confidence needed by showing them that firefighters come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. We can prove that they are capable by allowing them to participate in hands-on scenarios. And, we can mentor them as they prepare to start their journey into the fire service. Fire camps for young women have been started across the country. Yet, they can be expensive and may require more resources than a department has available. There are ways to host one-day events that can accomplish the same for women who may have an interest in the fire service. In this 90-minute class, we will discuss what has worked, what hasn’t, and how attendees can create effective recruitment events within their communities.
