Construction SuperConference 2019

S23 Dancing with Disaster: Great Construction Catastrophes and How They Shaped the Law (Room Palos Verdes 7)

18 Dec 19
8:30 AM - 9:45 AM
Construction is fraught with risk.  And while most structures successfully stand the test of time, it's the exceptions that rivet our attention.  This lively session will investigate the most infamous construction failures in history and their impact on the legal landscape, including: the Leaning Tower of Pisa; Blow-out at oil rig Deepwater Horizon; Great Johnstown Flood and dam burst; and Collapse at the Hyatt Regency Skyway.  Given our proximity, we'll address the special challenges and legal disputes associated with construction in Portuguese Bend, the 2019 SuperConference venue.  Our session will discuss the universal roles of engineering, technology, innovation, law, management, and human judgment that's needed at every construction project.  And in this way, we'll unravel the mistakes made at our case study sites, lessons learned, improvements taken, and laws that changed to forge a safer and smarter industry.  This session will benefit industry practitioners of all varieties: attorneys, risk managers, and executives alike.

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Understand improved risk management strategies and risk mitigation tactics.
  • Understand core engineering principles, industry terminology, construction techniques, and construction technology.
  • Have deeper insights about: 1) historical legal landscape in the construction industry; 2) evolving trends in building codes; and 3) over-confidence and human judgment.
