The research has developed an advanced hardware-in-the-loop testbed to evaluate the effectiveness of Connected Automated Vehicle (CAV) applications in urban intersections. The testbed integrates the PATH microscopic traffic model, a real-world test track with a signalized intersection, and a test CAV fleet. It allows the real systems to respond to various repeatable traffic analysis scenarios generated by the simulation tool. As a result, the researchers can obtain sufficient data sets to give a statistically valid description of the real CAV system performance, which is expensive, unsafe, and/or infeasible to observe in uncontrolled CAV field tests. The poster shows the detailed components of the testbed, the data flow among the components, and test results obtained from proof-of-concept analyses.
