Like other U.S. cities, the City of Tucson has grappled with the challenges facing the recycling industry, namely, increased costs and dwindling markets. To address the issue, Tucson opted to reduce recycling routes by collecting recycling every other week. The collection change affected more than 140,000 residents and required re-routing, extensive public outreach and support from the city governing body. Launched in September 2019, the program is helping to save costs, increase productivity and use equipment more productively. The City of Charlotte started down the path of providing every other week, single-stream recycling services – either directly or under contract – years ago. In this session, you gain a long-term historical perspective on providing EOW recyclables collection from Charlotte and recent lessons learned from Tucson since it switched over to every other week collection in September of 2019. Join us to learn how to apply the lessons learned from these bold initiatives in your community.
