Cable-Tec Expo 2019

The Goldilocks Band (Room 228-230)

The so-called spectral “mid-bands” have unique characteristics that are “just right” for many applications, with high available bandwidth and low propagation loss.  This workshop discusses the opportunities for mid-band use in wireless networks. Shaw Communications’ subsidiary Freedom Mobile, Canada’s fourth-largest mobile network operator, will present the results of its extensive pre-commercial 5G trials, in three frequency bands: low (600 MHz), mid (3.5 GHz) and high (38 GHz). Ericsson will explain what changed in the mid-band spectrum (2.5 GHz and above) to make it a new spectral darling – despite traditionally high propagation losses and poor building penetration. The workshop will include details on how BRS/EBS, CRBS and C-band have the potential to provide over 500 MHz of additional network capacity, on an economically attractive footprint relative to millimeter wave.
